West Virginia House Government Committee Passes Term Limits Resolution
Charleston, WV — Today, the West Virginia House Government Organization Committee passed a resolution to join other states in calling for a convention for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Sponsored by Delegate Jeff Pack, HCR9 is now headed for a vote on the floor of the House of Delegates. The measure is supported by the nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
A McLaughlin poll among likely West Virginia voters showed that 83% of those surveyed want term limits on Congress.
House Concurrent Resolution 9 (HCR9) and its sister senate resolution (SCR10) have a groundswell of bipartisan support in the legislature. More than 60% of the West Virginia lawmakers have signed the USTL pledge to co-sponsor and vote for the resolution.
Del. Pack commented, “Its time to drain the swamp of politicians who are out of touch with hard working West Virginians. The best way to do that is by establishing term limits on Congress.”
U.S. Term Limits’ President Philip Blumel commended the committee for passing the resolution. Blumel said, “The people of West Virginia are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. They know that Congress won’t set term limits on itself. Therefore, it is the obligation of the states to do so.”
Once passed in both the house and senate this session, West Virginia will be among fifteen other states that have passed Article V resolutions specifying an amendment for term limits on Congress. Once 34 states pass similar resolutions for term limits, a national convention of states will draft a proposal, bypassing Congress. The resulting proposal must be ratified by 38 states to become law.
