Montana Rep. Terry Moore files resolution to term limit Congress

Helena, MT – State Rep. Terry Moore (district 54) has filed House Joint Resolution 5 (HJR5) for Montana to join the states calling for a convention to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).

According to the latest RMG Research poll, 80% of likely voters in Montana support term limits on Congress, including strong support among Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike.

The President of U.S. Term Limits, Philip Blumel commended Moore for working on such an important electoral reform. Blumel said, “The people of Montana are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. By using their authority to term limit Congress, the states can restore citizen representation on Capitol Hill.”

Twenty-two representatives and eight senators in the Montana legislature have pledged to cosponsor and support the term limits resolution.

HJR5 is assigned to the State Administration and Veteran’s Affairs Committee for a vote before it makes its way to the chamber floor.

If passed, Montana will join other states in the call for an Article V convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing a congressional term limits amendment. Once thirty-four state legislatures pass similar resolutions Congress must call the convention for the states to propose the amendment. Ratification by three-fourths (38) of the states is required for the amendment to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
