Rep. Matt Lockett introduces resolution to term limit Congress
Washington, D.C. — Today, state representative Matt Lockett (R-Nicholasville) introduced a House Joint Resolution 27 (HJR 27) for Kentucky to join other states in calling for a convention for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The effort is supported by the nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits.
HJR 27 has bipartisan support in Frankfort. Twelve other members of the house have signed a pledge to vote for and co-sponsor the legislation: Dan Fister (R-Versailles), Jennifer Decker (R-Waddy), Kim Banta (R-Ft. Mitchell), William Lawrence (R-Maysville), Josh Bray (R-Mt. Vernon), George Brown, Jr. (D-Lexington), Deanna Frazier (R-Richmond), Shane Baker (R-Somerset), Tom Smith (R-Corbin), Robert Goforth (R-East Bernstadt), and Derek Lewis (R-London), and Bill Wesley (R-Ravenna).
“It has become abundantly clear that Congress is broken and career politicians refuse to seriously address critical issues which face our nation,” Lockett said. “Congress won’t ever do it to themselves. With the overwhelming majority of Kentuckians supporting term limits, it is time we take this extraordinary step.”
A poll taken by McLaughlin & Associates shows that 84% of likely voters in Kentucky support term limits on Congress, including strong support across partly lines. 82% of Republicans, 85% of Democrats, and 96% of independents in the poll support the reform.
U.S. Term Limits President Philip Blumel commended Rep. Lockett for putting forth the legislation. Blumel said, “The people of Kentucky are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. They know that Congress won’t set term limits on itself. Therefore, it is the obligation of the states to do so.”
HJR 27 is in the process of being assigned to committee for a vote before it makes its way to the floor of the Kentucky House of Representatives.
If passed in both the house and senate this session, Kentucky will join other states in the call to convene the states for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions on the topic and approve the term limits amendment, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
