Oklahoma State House Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress

Oklahoma City, OK — The Oklahoma House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards proposing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution by passing a resolution calling for congressional term limits. The bipartisan House Joint Resolution 1032 (HJR1032), sponsored by Representative Jon Echols, received overwhelming support with a vote of  59 yeas to 34 nays. This effort is backed by the nonpartisan, nonprofit U.S. Term Limits (USTL).

Rep. Echols noted that, “The American people want term limits and we are giving them a voice. This resolution is about sending a message to Washington D.C. that we need to break the status quo and return to citizen legislators, not career politicians.”

HJR1032 had strong support from 20 cosponsors in the House. In all, 30 Oklahoma legislators have signed the term limits pledge, indicating their support for this important election reform. According to a recent poll conducted by RMG Research, 73% of likely voters in Oklahoma support term limits on Congress, with broad support across party lines – 80% of Republicans, 81% of Democrats, and 62% of independents.

U.S. Term Limits President Philip Blumel praised the Oklahoma House for taking action to address the issue of term limits, stating, “The people of Oklahoma are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. They know that Congress won’t set term limits on itself. Therefore, it is the obligation of the states to do so.”

Once HJR1032 passes in the state senate, Oklahoma will join other states in applying for a national convention to propose term limits on Congress. To become part of the U.S. Constitution, the term limits amendment must be approved by 38 states. This marks a significant step towards establishing a citizen legislature in Congress and restoring trust in the democratic process.
