New MI-6 Poll: If Hoadley Stresses Term Limits, He Crushes Upton

Kalamazoo, MI – According to a new poll conducted by RMG Research, 33-year incumbent Congressman Fred Upton (R-Michigan) is at risk of losing his seat, and will go down in a landslide if Democratic challenger Jon Hoadley campaigns on term limits.

The poll, which was conducted from July 30-August 6th, found that Hoadley currently leads Upton 40%-36%, which is within the margin of error. But when voters are asked who they would support if Hoadley were to sign the U.S. Term Limits pledge, which Upton opposes, Hoadley jumps out to a 17-point lead (47%-30%). Hoadley’s surge in support would come mainly from Republicans, independents and previous Upton supporters who favor term limits.

If Hoadley endorses congressional term limits, he will receive a 17-point bump with independents and a 5-point bounce with Republicans. According to the poll, 75% of voters in district six favor term limits on Congress, including 71% of Democrats, 69% of independents and 84% of Republicans. That means Upton’s opposition to term limits is very out of step with what his own district – and even his own party – wants.

The poll also shows that most people are unaware of the fact that Fred Upton opposes term limits. Only one in five could correctly state that Upton is opposed. This gap in awareness presents a great opportunity for Hoadley to drive up Upton’s negatives and widen his own lead. After voters learn that Upton opposes term limits – they flock to Hoadley in droves. Assuming, of course, that Hoadley himself would support congressional term limits.

The survey of 500 registered voters in Michigan’s 6th district was conducted online by RMG Research, Inc. from July 30-August 6th, 2020 using a representative sample to reflect the district’s population of registered voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points. RMG Research is owned and operated by Scott Rasmussen.
