Louisiana House Committee Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress

Baton Rouge, LA — The Louisiana House Committee on House and Governmental Affairs just passed a resolution calling for the states to convene to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. House Concurrent Resolution 51 (HCR51), passed by a vote of 8-2 which moves the resolution on to the House floor for its chamber vote.

The resolution’s sponsor Rep. Mark Wright (District 77) argued in favor of the resolution saying, ““It make sense to have some turn over in the whole system. That’s what I think is effective. I know we lose some experience here because of our term limits but at the end of the day I feel like we’ve got too much talent in this state and other states not to bring in new blood, have new conversations, let new people take the lead. That is why I am most assuredly for this.”

USTL President, Philip Blumel, praised the senate committee on the victory, “The people of Louisiana should be proud that their state representatives are willing to listen to the majority of voters who want term limits. America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians. This is a rare, truly nonpartisan issue with national appeal.”

According to a recent poll by McLaughlin & Associates, 85% of likely voters in Louisiana support term limits on Congress, including strong support across partly lines. 94% of Republicans, 80% of Democrats, and 83% of independents support the reform.

Once passed in the house, HCR51 moves to the state senate. When successful there, Louisiana will be added to the growing list of states calling for a term limits amendment under Article V of the U.S. Constitution. Thirty-four states are needed to hold the proposal convention. After which, thirty-eight states must ratify the terms limits proposal in order for it to become the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.

To date, sixteen states have passed resolutions for a national amendment proposal convention specific to term limits. In a divided political climate, term limits for Congress is the one true, non-partisan issue that both former President Trump and former President Obama have publicly endorsed.
