Kansas House Committee Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Topeka, KS — The Kansas House on Federal and State Affairs Committee just passed a resolution calling for the states to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. House Concurrent Resolution 5005 (HCR5005), sponsored by Representative Bill Sutton, passed by a vote of 13 to 9. This effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan nonprofit U.S. Term Limits.
HCR5005 has the bipartisan support of nearly fifty Kansas lawmakers who signed the term limits pledge promising to support the congressional term limits effort.
According to a recent scientific poll conducted by RMG Research, an overwhelming 83% of voters approve of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will place term limits on U.S. Senators and U.S. House Representatives. Large majorities also say that Congress members stay in power for too long, and that they’re more likely to support state lawmakers who help advance congressional term limits.
Once HCR5005 passes both state chambers, Kansas will have the distinction of being among the first states in the nation to file an application for the states to convene for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. When 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions on the topic, and the term limits amendment is approved, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
