Term Limits on Congress Resolution Filed in Kansas
Topeka, KS —State Representative Bill Sutton (district 43) has filed House Concurrent Resolution 5005 (HCR5005) along with 36 co-sponsors for Kansas to join the states calling for a convention to propose a Congressional Term Limits Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The co-sponsors are: Reps. Barth, Bergkamp, Bryce, Blake & Will Carpenter, Croft, Eplee, Essex, Fairchild, Garber, Goetz, Hill, Hoffman, Howe, Howell, Kessler, Lewis, Minnix, Moser, Murphy, Neelly, Owens, Penn, Pickert, Roth, Sanders, Schmoe, Seiwert, Adam Smith, Tarwater, Thomas, Thompson, Turk, Wasinger, and Laura Williams.
By using Article V of the U.S. Constitution, 34 state legislatures can team to call a convention to propose a congressional term limits amendment. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
The President of U.S. Term Limits, Philip Blumel commended Rep. Sutton for working on such an important election reform. Blumel said, “The people of Kansas are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in Washington, D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. By using Article V to term limit Congress, the states can restore citizen representation on Capitol Hill.”
Blumel noted the high popularity of congressional term limits, which receives 87% support from Republicans, 83% support from Democrats and 75% support from independents nationwide, according to the most recent national poll by Scott Rasmussen of RMG Research.
Once HCR5005 passes the state legislature this session, Kansas will put Washington, D.C. on notice that it intends to join other states in calling for a convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures apply for the convention of the 50 states and approve a term limits amendment proposal, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
