North Carolina House Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Raleigh, NC — The North Carolina House just passed House Joint Resolution 151 (HJR151) for term limits on Congress, sponsored by Speaker Tim Moore. The resolution would memorialize the state’s intention to participate in an amendment proposal convention to limit the time a member of Congress may hold office. The resolution, which has 31 sponsors, is being advocated by U.S. Term Limits (USTL), a national nonprofit organization advocating for term limits. 56 lawmakers in North Carolina have signed a pledge committing to support this resolution.
“The majority of Americans support the additional measure of accountability for their elected leaders in Washington,” Moore said in a news release on the resolution. “Term limits would benefit both Congress and the rest of the country by paving the way for more competitive elections. This is the one thing the states can do to rein in the federal government on both sides of the aisle.”
USTL President Philip Blumel commends the sponsors for their work on this important electoral reform. Blumel believes that the states could restore faith in the federal government by using Article V to term limit Congress.
According to the most recent North Carolina poll by McLaughlin & Associates, (74%) of North Carolina voters favor an amendment imposing term limits on Congress. Term limits is supported by 75% of the G.O.P., 77% of Democratic Party members and 72% of independents in the Tar Heel state.
Once the measure passes the state senate, North Carolina will put Congress on notice that it intends to invoke Article V of the U.S. Constitution, whereby the state legislatures convene for the exclusive purpose of proposing a congressional term limits amendment. After 34 state legislatures apply for the convention, and approve a term limits amendment proposal, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
