U.S. Rep. Jared Golden Cosponsors Resolution to Propose Term Limits on Congress
Augusta, Maine — Yesterday Jared Golden, the Democratic Representative from Maine’s 2nd congressional district, signed his name to the resolution proposing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to limit the terms of members of Congress.
The largest and oldest organization dedicated exclusively to limiting the terms of elected officials, U.S. Term Limits applauds Rep. Golden who recognizes the value of term limiting his own office. Who else would know better than incumbent members that term limits are an important and necessary reform to fix a dysfunctional federal institution?
House Joint Resolution 12 (HJR12), sponsored by South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman calls for twelve years maximum in the U.S. Senate and six years total in the U.S. House of Representatives. According to the lastest poll on term limits in Maine conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, term limits enjoy wide bipartisan support. McLaughlin’s analysis shows that support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups. An overwhelming 75% of likely voters in Maine approve of a constitutional amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress, including 71% of Democrats and 88% of Republicans.
The measure has a total of 63 members signed on as cosponsors plus Norman as sponsor. All-in-all, support is expected to exceed 100 members during the 117th Congress.
“Support for term limits in Congress has never been as fervent as it is now,” says Nicolas Tomboulides, Executive Director of U.S. Term Limits. He added, “Golden has the guts to admit the institution is broken and knows the solution is a congressional term limits amendment.”
In committing his support for term limits, Golden joins other prominent members of the Democratic Party in doing so, including former President Barach Obama, John Hickenlooper, the U.S. Senator from Colorado, U.S. Rep. from Massachusetts, Lori Trahan, U.S. Rep. from Arizona, Ann Kirkpatrick, and U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna from California, among others.
HJR12 specifies that the clocks of current members would not start ticking until after 38 states ratify the proposal. It details that “no term beginning before the date of the ratification of this article shall be taken into account in determining eligibility for election or appointment under this article.”
USTL does not require pledge signers to limit themselves absent an amendment to the Constitution.
Timing could not be better as state House Speaker Nathan Wadsworth (District 70) has introduced HP438, a resolution for Maine to join other states in calling for a national convention for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The lead senate sponsor is Sen. Richard Bennett (District 19). The effort is supported by the nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
