Georgia Senate Passes Term Limits on Congress Resolution
Atlanta, Georgia – Senate Resolution 237, which specifies calling a national convention to amend the U.S. Constitution to limit congressional terms, passed the Georgia State Senate today. U.S. Term Limits (USTL), a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy group, is shepherding the resolution through the Georgia Legislature.
SR 237, sponsored by Senator Cowsert (and cosponsored by Senators Hufstetler, Dugan, Albers, Jones, and Dolezal) passed the Georgia Senate this afternoon.
“I am pleased to have sponsored SR237, an Article V resolution calling for Congressional term limits, that passed the Georgia Senate overwhelmingly today,” said Sen. Cowsert. He continued, “It now crosses over to the House where I call upon my fellow legislators to pass this resolution so that Georgia can join other states in exercising our constitutional authority to rein in the federal government and break the logjam in Washington. 82% of all Georgians support this bipartisan effort. Together, we can bring historic change to our country.”
The sister resolution, H.R 53 sponsored by Rep. Dunahoo, which was filed in January and has the backing of at least 35 supporters in the Georgia House, has been assigned to the House Rules Committee. A win in both chambers will place Georgia at the forefront of states applying to propose an amendment for the sole purpose of limiting the terms a member of the U.S. Congress may serve.
Philip Blumel, President of U.S. Term Limits, praised the vote, “The Georgia Senate realizes that the best chance to passing a term limits proposal is through a national term limits convention. Georgians should be proud of today’s outcome. Now is the time for the grassroots to take action to move HR53 through the Georgia House.”
According to the last nationwide poll on term limits conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, conducted in January 2018, term limits enjoys wide bipartisan support. McLaughlin’s analysis states, “Support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups. An overwhelming 82% of voters approve of a constitutional amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress.”
There are fourteen states that have passed resolutions for a national amendment proposal convention specifically naming term limits in the subject. In a divided political climate, term limits for Congress is the one true, non-partisan issue that both President Trump and former President Obama have publicly endorsed.
Once applications pass in 34 states, a term limits amendment proposal convention will be called. Once accepted, the amendment would need ratification from 38 states to become part of the Constitution.
