Georgia Resolution for Term Limits on Congress in Jeopardy
Atlanta, Georgia – The resolution calling for a term limits amendment on Congress has not seen the light of day in the Georgia House, despite passing the Georgia senate last year. The bill, SR195, is being held up in the House Rules committee and must be scheduled for a vote before Friday, March 23.
“Time is of the essence if an Article V term limits resolution is going to pass in the Georgia General Assembly this year,” claims, David Guldenschuh, a special advisor to U.S. Term Limits. “SR195 has been stuck in House Rules since last year and will die there if it doesn’t get scheduled for a vote. That tells me that leadership is not pushing this matter,” he added. “Leadership should listen to the grassroots and get behind this resolution.”
Term limits are important to more than 80 percent of Georgians, regardless of party, who say they support Congressional term limits. The biggest appeal to enacting term limits on Congress is to help fix the dysfunction and inaction evident the past 40 years.
“If the people are tired of our dysfunctional national government, this is an easy way they can help fix it,” states Guldenschuh. “Georgians must pick up the phone and contact House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge (404-656- 5020) and Rules Committee Chairman John Meadows, R-Calhoun (404-656- 5141) and ask them to schedule a hearing on SR195. It’s easy to do and will make a meaningful difference.”
Once SR195 passes the House, Georgia would be one of the 34 states required to trigger a term limits amendment proposal convention, as outlined in Article V of the U.S. Constitution. The amendment must then be ratified by 38 states for it to be adopted as part of the Constitution.
Two of Georgia’s neighbors, Alabama and Florida, have already passed congressional term limits applications exclusive to term limits, and other states are well on their way to doing the same.
