U.S. Term Limits Applauds Gov. DeSantis & Rep. David Trone: “The Congressional Playing Field is Not Even—Term Limits are the Fix”
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Term Limits (USTL) today voiced strong support for Governor Ron DeSantis following his recent appearance highlighted by Forbes, where he forcefully argued that the structure of Congress is fundamentally rigged against the American people.
Referencing CNN’s Jake Tapper interview from Tuesday, November 18th, “‘It Is Not an Even Playing Field’: Ron DeSantis Pushes for Congressional Term Limits,” USTL affirmed that the Governor’s position cuts to the heart of Washington’s corruption problem: a system that rewards longevity, not public service.
“Governor DeSantis is absolutely correct: the playing field in Washington is completely uneven,” said Nick Tomboulides, Executive Director of U.S. Term Limits. “When members of Congress have to serve 20 or 30 years just to gain a powerful position, they stop viewing themselves as temporary representatives and start seeing themselves as permanent rulers. This entrenched power dynamic is the reason our government is gridlocked and unresponsive.”
The Case Against Entrenched Incumbents
In the Forbes-highlighted discussion, Governor DeSantis outlined the need to fundamentally change the incentive structure in Congress:
-
Dismantling Seniority: DeSantis argued that term limits would replace the toxic seniority system with a merit-based structure driven by a sense of urgency. The goal is to enforce the principle: “Serve and go home.”
-
Empowering Citizens Over Lobbyists: Addressing critics who claim term limits empower unelected staff or lobbyists, the Governor asked, “Who do you think has been running it now?” He underscored the reality that career politicians are already beholden to D.C. interests, a dynamic that term limits are designed to disrupt.
“The Governor’s commitment to this cause is exactly what the term limits movement needs,” Tomboulides added. “He understands that this isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue; it is a fundamental governance issue that unites Americans across the political spectrum.”
The Path to a Citizen Legislature
USTL and its national leadership are focused on achieving a constitutional amendment that would limit U.S. Representatives to three terms (six years) and U.S. Senators to two terms (twelve years).
USTL continues to pursue the most viable avenue for reform—the Article V Convention. This process bypasses a self-interested Congress by allowing 34 state legislatures to propose the Term Limits Amendment, which must then be ratified by 38 states.
“We urge every state legislature that has yet to act to listen to the overwhelming majority of Americans who support this reform, and heed the call from leaders like Governor DeSantis,” concluded Tomboulides. “It is time to end the era of the career politician and restore the vision of a citizen Congress.”
