Florida Senate Committee Advances Landmark Term Limit Bills
TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Florida Senate Ethics and Elections committee advanced two significant bills on 3/17, SJR 536 and SJR 802, which propose amendments to the Florida Constitution to establish term limits for state legislators and local elected officials.
SJR 536, sponsored by Senator Blaise Ingoglia, proposes revising the term limits applicable to state representatives and state senators. The bill passed the Ethics and Elections with a favorable vote of 6-2.
SJR 802, also sponsored by Senator Ingoglia, proposes establishing term limits for members of boards of county commissioners and district school boards. This bill also received a favorable vote of 6-2 from the committee.
Both bills were initially scheduled for consideration on March 10, 2025, but were temporarily postponed and successfully advanced on 3/17, March 17, 2025. In addition, the Committee rejected two amendments from Sen. Erin Grall to lengthen Florida term limits from 8 years in a single seat to 12.

By limiting the number of terms served by our elected officials, we are fostering a more responsive and representative government.”
SJR 536 and SJR 802 will now move forward in the legislative process. If passed by the Florida Legislature, these constitutional amendments will be placed on the ballot for Florida voters to decide in the next general election.
