Pennsylvania Files Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Philadelphia, PA – Pennsylvania State Senator Jarrett Coleman (District 16) has signed on as the Senate sponsor of Senate Resolution 225 (SR225). This resolution would have Pennsylvania join other states in calling for a convention for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In addition, Pennsylvania State House Rep. Jared Solomon (District 202) has signed on as the House sponsor of House Resolution 183 (HR183). This concurrent resolution is calling for a convention under Article V of the Constitution of the United States to consider amendments that limit the number of terms that members of Congress may serve and establish and limit the terms of office for United States Supreme Court Justices.
Senator Coleman stated, “The American public overwhelmingly supports a constitutional amendment enacting term limits on Congress. Despite popular support for the issue, Washington D.C. has failed to act on this matter.”
According to the latest Pulse Opinion Research poll, 79% of likely voters in Pennsylvania support term limits for Congress with strong support among Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike. Many state legislators have committed their support by signing a pledge to co-sponsor this legislation. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
U.S. Term Limits President Philip Blumel commended Senator Coleman and Representative Solomon for putting forth the legislation. Blumel said, “The people of Pennsylvania are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. They know that Congress won’t set term limits on itself. Therefore, it is the obligation of the states to do so.”
Upon passage of SR225 or HR183, Pennsylvania will join other states to call a convention limited to proposing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will limit the number of terms a person may be elected to the House of Representatives and Senate. Article V requires two-thirds (34) of the state legislatures to pass similar resolutions to force Congress to call the convention and if passed, the amendment will need to be ratified by three-fourths (38) of the states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
