Utah Rep. Ken Ivory Files Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Salt Lake City, UT — Utah State Rep. Ken Ivory (district 39) has filed a resolution, House Joint Resolution 6 (HJR6) for term limits on Congress. The measure initiates an application to participate in an amendment proposal convention specific to limiting the time a member of Congress may hold office. The measure is being spearheaded by U.S. Term Limits (USTL) the only national nonprofit focused solely on term limits.
In his book, Where’s the Line? How the State Protects the Constitution, Ivory writes that the states serve as a vital bulwark protecting our nation. As such, state lawmakers are legally and morally obligated to uphold the principals of our governing document.
Philip Blumel, the President of USTL, commended Ivory for working on such an important electoral reform. Blumel said, “Rep. Ivory knows Congress will never set term limits on itself. That is why he sponsored HJR6 — for the states to assert their power to correct what Congress will not. Rep. Ivory knows the states must take the lead in restoring citizen representation on Capitol Hill.”
Blumel also noted the high popularity of congressional term limits in Utah, which receives 78% support from Republicans, 80% support from Democrats and 76% support from independents nationwide, according to the most recent national poll by RMG Research.
Once HJR6 passes the state legislature this session, Utah will be added to the growing list of states calling for a convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. After 34 state legislatures apply for the convention and a term limits amendment proposal is approved, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
