Georgia State Rep. Hilton Files Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Atlanta, GA — Georgia State Representative Scott Hilton (district 48) filed resolution, House Resolution 257 (HR257), for term limits on Congress. This puts Congress on notice that Georgia intends to participate in an amendment proposal convention. The single-issue convention specifies limiting the terms a member of Congress may hold office.
The resolution is spearheaded by U.S. Term Limits (U.S.T.L.), the only national nonprofit focused solely on term limits. HR257 is being sponsored by Reps. Scott Hilton, Derrick McCollum, Lauren Daniel, Beth Camp, Matthew Gambill and Karen Mathiak. There are 55 Georgia state lawmakers in the current legislature who have committee their support to this resolution by signing the term limits pledge.
Philip Blumel, the president of U.S.T.L, commended the sponsors for working on this important electoral reform. Blumel said, “The people of Georgia are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. By using Article V to term limit Congress, the states can restore citizen representation on Capitol Hill.”
According to the most recent poll by RMG Research, 72% Republicans, 82% Democrats and 64% independents approve of placing term limits on members of Congress.
Once HR257 passes both chambers of the state legislature this session, Georgia will join other states calling for a convention exclusively to propose term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures apply for the convention and approve the term limits amendment language, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
