Oklahoma House Committee Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Oklahoma City, OK — Today, the Oklahoma House Rules committee passed HJR1032 by a vote of 8-2. HJR1032, sponsored by Rep. Jonathan Echols, puts Congress on notice that Oklahoma wants to join other states in calling for a convention to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit U.S. Term Limits.
The most recent poll conducted by RMG Research, shows that 73% of likely voters in Oklahoma support term limits on Congress, including strong support across party lines. 80% of Republicans, 81% of Democrats, and 62% of independents support this important election reform.
U.S. Term Limits’ President Philip Blumel commended Rep. Echols for putting forth the resolution. Blumel said, “The people of Oklahoma are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. They know that Congress won’t set term limits on itself. Therefore, it is the obligation of the states to do so.”
HJR1032 will be scheduled for a vote on the floor of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. The companion bill in the senate, SJR14 will be scheduled after the full House vote.
If passed in both the state house and senate this session, Oklahoma will join other states to convene for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions on the topic and approve the term limits amendment, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
