South Carolina Senator Rex Rice Files Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Charleston, SC — South Carolina State Senator Rex Rice (district 2) filed Senate Concurrent Resolution 481 (SCR481) for term limits on Congress. The resolution proposes an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that limits the time a member of Congress may hold office. The measure is being spearheaded by U.S. Term Limits (U.S.T.L.), the only national nonprofit focused solely on term limits.
Once passed, South Carolina would be one of the 34 state legislatures needed to call a national convention to propose a congressional term limits amendment.
Philip Blumel, President of U.S.T.L., commended Senator Rice for working on such an important election reform. Blumel says of Rice, “The people of South Carolina are lucky to have a true public servant who sees what is going on in D.C. and is willing to take action to fix it. By using Article V of the Constitution to term limit Congress, the states can restore citizen representation on Capitol Hill.”
Blumel emphasized 82% bipartisan popularity of congressional term limits, 84% support from Republicans, 80% support from Democrats and 83% support from independents, according to the most recent national poll by McLaughlin & Associates.
When the term limits resolution passes both chambers of the state legislature this session, South Carolina will be putting Washington, D.C. on notice calling for a convention proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures apply for the convention and approve a term limits amendment proposal, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
