U.S. House Rep. Tim Burchett Honored for Supporting Congressional Term Limits

Nashville, TN — U.S. Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee’s 2nd congressional district was honored for his steadfast commitment for term limits on Congress. Aaron Dukette of U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the nation’s largest pro-term limits group, presented a plaque inscribed with the verbiage of the term limits pledge Burchett signed. It reads, “As a member of Congress, I, Tim Burchett will cosponsor and vote for an amendment of three (3) house terms and (2) senate terms and no longer limit.”

More than 92 members of Congress, including Burchett, have cosponsored the U.S. House Joint Resolution 12 (HJR12) and its counterpart in the U.S. Senate SJR3. The congressional resolutions are a means for Congress to propose the term limits amendment.

In a recent op-ed, Burchett penned, “If my brief time in the U.S. House of Representatives has taught me anything, it’s that Congress will never be fixed without term limits. I wish all my colleagues would join me in this commonsense effort, but the reality is that Congress is unlikely to term-limit itself.” He continued, “That’s why I’m hoping the Tennessee General Assembly will support a term-limits convention and pass House Joint Resolution 8 (HJR 8). Members of Congress need to be more focused on working for the American public instead of on their next reelection campaigns.”

HJR8 is a resoltuion in Tennessee calling for a convention where the states propose term limits on Congress.

According to the last Tennessee poll on term limits conducted by RMG Research, the issue of term limits enjoys wide bipartisan support. 78% of the respondents want term limits on Congress including 77% of Republicans, 90% of Democrats, and 71% of independents strongly approve of placing term limits on members of Congress.

HJR8 passed the Tennessee state house last week and is working its way through the senate. Once it passes, Tennessee will join other states in sending notice to Congress that they support a term limits on Congress amendment proposal convention. Once a proposal is approved, it must be ratified by 38 states in order to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
